Setting SMART intentions for 2018.

I have said pretty much every January since the birth of my blog how much I do not like resolutions. Resolutions are usually broken by the 10th of January and are usually wildly unobtainable or just so vague that you don't ever stick to them.

In my day job I work in project management, and quite a lot of those techniques can be carried forward into your day to day life, making measurable and smart goals or intentions being one. By smart I don't just mean well thought out or intelligent. I mean SMART > specific, measurable, agreed upon, realistic and time-based.

With this in mind I decided to set myself shorter goals, monthly or bi monthly intentions that are achievable, measurable and realistic. So I will check in every once in a while and see where I am at and reflect and refocus.


There are a lot of things I would love to do in 2018, from buy a house, to get promoted, to get fitter etc... But those are vague and far too big to even comprehend, so lets break it down.

Rather than buy a house, I need to start with getting my finances in order, pay off some debts and get some savings back under my belt. The wedding pretty much wiped out our small amount of savings, but setting realistic savings goals each month is completely doable. We are entering into the term following Zoe's third birthday in January so should notice a drastic reduction in childcare costs (YAY).

Getting promoted, thats a big and very vague statement too, so rather than focus on the end goal I thought I would set smaller measurable goals instead. One being to look into mentoring schemes, show initiative by shadowing project managers, and also read up on things like Agile methodology and get to grips with Jira software. These small steps should help me on the road to where I want to be in 2018.

Getting fitter... *sigh*. This is such a hard thing for me right now. I want to be fitter and feel healthier, but I do not want to fall into the 'new year, new me' trap and go on a diet. I hate diet culture, I hate hearing people moan and struggle and punish themselves in an endless cycle. So I will say this right now, I am absolutely 100% not going on a diet. I am instead going to focus on feeling good, whether that be upping my vitamin intake, taking up running, cutting down on caffeine, taking time to pursue my creative side etc... Self care is the name of the game.

So with those three big overarching themes in mind, my goals for January and February are;

1. Set up a direct debit of a realistic regular amount each month into my savings account.

2. Review any debts and increase direct debits slightly if possible.

3. New year clearout, clear out the cupboards and do some ebay/facebook listing, clear space and raise cash - win win.

4. Do some work based reading outside of work.

5. Put myself forward for things and be a positive force at work.

6. Be less afraid to get things wrong, ask questions.

6. Charge and wear your fitbit, aim for 10k steps each day.

7. Drink more water

8. Try yoga
