Pancake day: Reese's Pieces Buttermilk Pancakes


I adore pancakes, there I said it. I love the classic thin crepe-y ones swimming in lemon and sugar, the fluffy American ones drowning in maple syrup with a side of bacon. I could live on pancakes alone and be a very happy (slightly malnourished) bunny.

I made these pancakes over the weekend as a special treat for myself, I had a frankly awful week last week which ended in me having a snotty splutter-y panic attack in Fenwicks and feeling rather sorry for myself (a story for another time perhaps) so i needed a little sugary pick me up to get me back to my usual happy self.

I don't make pancakes as often as I would like but I am the only person in my house who likes them so it often seems wasteful to make a large amount. I sometimes save leftover yorkshire pudding batter for a cheeky pancake or two...


I decided to make fluffy buttermilk pancakes this time but add a secret indulgent ingredient; Reeces Pieces. For those unfamiliar with these little pieces of peanut butter heaven they are an American creation of peanut butter wrapped in a sugar coating or shell. They are something I buy once in a while, normally as a reward or treat as they can be prices (£1.40) for such a small packet (imported).

Here is the recipe;

Makes about 10-15 small pancakes.

  • 120ml buttermilk
  • 150g plain flour
  • half tsp baking powder
  • pinch of salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • Butter for cooking with
  • 55g bag of Reeces Pieces
  • splash of vanilla extract

    It really is as simple as mixing all the dry ingredients then adding the buttermilk and eggs and whisking until smooth. Foolproof.

    Once you have the batter ready you can mix in whatever extras you fancy, chocolate chips, blueberries or other fruit, toffee pieces, the possibilities are endless!
    You can even mix flavourings such as vanilla or cinnamon into the batter too!

    I went for a packet of Reeses Pieces and a splash of vanilla.



    The pancakes were amazing, light and fluffy and not too sickly but with peanut butter dotted about. The Reeces Pieces inevitable melted leaving pockets of yummy peanut butter in the pancake, the colour of the pieces ran into the pancake as a little clue as to where to find the peanut butter treasure!

      1. I find buttermilk next to the cream in the supermarket. Or you could substitute for regular milk with a splash of lemon juice.

    3. I don't usually make pancakes, as my pancakes are never very good. My crepes are delicious though. I take this as further evidence that I was french in my former life.

      Have you considered using just peanut butter chips instead of reese's pieces? Can you buy pb chips there? It might be a cheaper alternative for you. And you'd still get the delicious pb flavor. But of course you'd miss out on the rainbow colors from the candy shell. Peanut butter chip pancakes with chocolate sauce would be DIVINE!

      1. I have used Peanut Butter chips before but again I had to buy them from America so they were more expensive. I haven't seen them sold in UK supermarkets before.
