Weekly Bake-off: Marble cake

This weeks weekly bake off bake is the impressive looking vanilla and chocolate chip marble cake. The recipe was so easy to follow but wielded pretty lovely results...

Chocolate chip and vanilla marble cake

  • 225g butter (softened)
  • 225g caster sugar
  • 275g self-raising flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1.5 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 2 tbsp hot water
  • 50g chocolate chips

  • Once again this recipe uses the "all-in-one" method. Simply pop the butter, sugar, flour, baking powder, eggs and milk into a mixing bowl and beat well until blended...

Then simply spoon half of the vanilla mixture into a baking pan, leave gaps inbetween for the chocolate sponge.

Meanwhile in a small bowl combine the cocoa powder with the boiling water and allow to cool, them combine it with the remaining cake mixture. Lastly, mix in the chocolate chips.

Finally, spoon the chocolate cake mixture into the gaps in the cake tin and level the top.

Cook at 180 for 35-40 mins.

I have to say that this cake is pretty darn delicious! Very moist and rich. If I was to make it again I would possibly omit the chocolate chips as they sank to the bottom of the mixture and made for a soggy bottom.

I love the marble effect though and will definitely experiment with it some more in the future.

    2. I did make it, I had a lot of melted white and milk chocolate left over after decorating the top, so I made a swirly marbled slab and refrigerated it, and then cut out the heart using a cookie cutter.
